  • Responsibilities

    General Description and Essential Functions includes the following: Other duties may be applied as necessary.


    • In a friendly manner answers all calls, in addition responds to both external and internal requests for pathology reports, and client requests for reports and supplies.
    • Enters gross description of specimens in software data base. Separates requisitions by physicians for distributions and takes to histology lab.
    • Will listen to and transcribe verbal and/ or written dictation for Pathologist.
    • Prints and collates pathology reports, ensuring all reports are signed by Pathologist (if needed).
    • May perform medical coding on pathology cases (including but not limited to CPT and ICD-10)
    • Transcribes miscellaneous reports and letters
    • Coordinates courier services for appropriate client/ lab send-outs.
    • Forwards reports, letters, slides, blocks, and supplies to clients as needed.
    • Keeps records of materials (slides, blocks) received, sent, or returned to client offices. Knowledge of TC Providers and where blocks are stored and/ or returned.
    • Enters and updates patient demographic information in software database, when needed.
    • Enters pathology charges/ insurance in software database.
    • Prints patient reports and pulls slides for Pathologist as needed.
    • Maintains organized filing system for slides, documents, and pathology reports.
    • Communicates with pathologist staff, and clients in regards to pathology specimens.
    • Updates policies and procedures in correlation with CAP regulations as necessary
    • Troubleshoots and resolves problems with software and printer server
    • Proficient computer skills to include transcription software products and MS Office.
    • Properly refiling pathology slides and blocks in numerical order
    • Labeling slide and block boxes with the slide prefix and number range. Maintains and archives slides and blocks for offsite storage.
    • Unpacking slide and blocks returned from outside facilities, completing the tracking event and checking for an addendum report in LIGO.
    • Assists and covers in histology/ cytology lab when needed
    • In addition to an employee’s typical work schedule, this position may require employees to work weekends, split shifts, and holidays if needed by the company.
    • Participates in and supports all Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement endeavors for the laboratory, as applicable


    Physical Capabilities


    • Light physical effort (lift/carry up to 25 lbs.)
    • Occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching
    • Frequent, prolonged standing/sitting/walking
    • Must be able to see, hear, and respond adequately
    • Extensive computer work
    • Frequent use of telephone and fax
    • Required to professionally interact with clients, pathologists, division personnel and/or attend meetings, educational training



    Position and Educational Requirements


    • Must be able to accurately type 30-50 WPM
    • Minimum 2-4 years previous medical terminology and pathology transcription required
    • Must have knowledge of general pathology report formatting and specifications
    • Must have advanced spelling, grammatical, and organizational skills
    • HIPAA training and knowledge required
    • High school diploma or GED required.
    • Two years of laboratory experience preferred
